Title: IDENTIFICATION AND USE OF SOLANUM TUBEROSUM SUBSP. ANDIGENA CLONES HAVING BOTH FOLIAR AND TUBER RESISTANCE TO LATE BLIGHT

Technical Abstract: Breeding solely for foliar resistance to late blight without emphasis on tuber resistance has the potential to exacerbate tuber infection. Wild potato species are valuable sources of foliar and tuber blight resistance. However, most species are difficult to sexually hybridize with cultivated potato without the use of 2n gametes or ploidy manipulations. Solanum tuberosum subsp. andigena is closely related to and hybridizes readily with cultivated potato (S. tuberosum subsp. tuberosum). Andigena is a recognized source of foliar late blight resistance and may be a source of tuber blight resistance as well. Five hundred and thirteen plants representing 13 accessions of andigena were initially tested for foliar resistance to late blight using a detached leaf assay. Four hundred and twenty-seven clones were subsequently evaluated for tuber blight resistance using a laboratory inoculation assay. Twenty-seven clones of andigena were identified as having combined resistance to both foliar and tuber infection by late blight. These resistant individuals and additional andigena clones that varied in their foliar and tuber response to late blight infection were evaluated in 2004 in late blight field evaluations at Bonners Ferry, ID and Corvallis, OR. Correspondence between laboratory and field assessments of andigena clones for late blight resistance in foliage and tuber will be presented, as well as our progress in obtaining andigena x tuberosum hybrids.
