Journal of the Kansas Entomological Society. 80(1):43-50. Interpretive Summary: A new species of wheat stem sawfly parasitoid was discovered in China. This paper describes and names the new species. The new species, Collyria catoptron, was found in Gansu Province, in north central China. This species has a similar biology to other members of the genus. It’s a solitary internal parasitoid that attacks the egg and larval host stage. It was reared from Cephus fumipennis, a sawfly species that attacks wheat in Asia. Collyria catoptron is currently being evaluated as a possible biological control agent for Cephus cinctus in North America.
Technical Abstract: A new species, Collyria catoptron, is described from Gansu Province, China. It is a solitary egg-larval koinobiont parasitoid reared from Cephus fumipennis Eversmann, a grass-mining sawfly that attacks wheat in Asia. Collyria catoptron is currently being evaluated as a possible biological control agent for Cephus cinctus Norton in North America.
