Interpretive Summary: Melons, squash, cucumber, and their relatives are an important food source around the world and contain many phytonutrients important in the human diet. In some countries most of these crops are grown in greenhouses or hoop houses; many times they are grafted or grown from transplants. In the United States, these plants are rarely grafted or grown in hoop houses, but transplanting is common across many geographical and climatic regions in America. With an increased interest in phytonutrient content in fruits and vegetables, scientists have started looking at environmental factors affecting fruit quality. This review attempts to summarize what has been written about cultural methods and quality issues in these crops.

Technical Abstract: Cucurbits are an important food source around the world and contain many phytonutrients important in the human diet. In some countries most of the cucurbits grown are in greenhouses or hoop houses; many times they are grafted or grown from transplants. In the United States, cucurbit grafting and hoop house culture is rare but transplanting is common across many geographical and climatic regions in America. With an increased interest in phytonutrient content in fruits and vegetables, the U.S. cucurbit industry is starting to look at environmental factors affecting fruit quality. This review attempts to summarize what has been written about cultural methods and quality issues in cucurbits.
