Technical Abstract: Effective integrated pest management programs are needed for food processing and storage facilities and this requires improvements in our ability to monitor pest populations and use this information to target management tactics in both time and space. The use of pheromone traps to detect pests is increasing, but implementation has been hampered by lack of information on how to use pheromone trap capture information. In this symposium presentation, some of the practical issues associated with implementing and interpreting pheromone monitoring programs will be illustrated using recently collected data from the field and laboratory. The importance of long term monitoring of both inside and outside populations to understand the spatial scale of pest distribution and movement patterns in making pest management decisions will be emphasized and illustrated using data from several food facilities.
