Technical Abstract: In one study Coleman’s new mosquito trap was evaluated over the course of an entire year in one suburban neighborhood to determine its operational reliability and mosquito catching efficacy. The trap operated with very few days of down time during the course of 12 months. Usually a clogged gas assembly tip was the cause of the shut down. Gas tips were easily changed by the trap operator in 1 minute or less. Over 20 species of mosquitoes were collected. Species composition and relative abundance varied with environmental conditions, month of year and what attractant lures were used in the traps. The standard lure was a BioSensory octenol lure. Other lures tested included acetone, lactic acid and various analogues of octenol. In a second study the Coleman MD-2500 trap was compared to three other mosquito traps (Blue Rhino’s SV-2000 and two models of American Biophysics traps, the PRO and the Liberty Plus) in a coastal environment. All trap models caught large numbers of mosquitoes and biting midges.
