Technical Abstract: This article is the text of the Founders Lecture presented by Dr. James J. Becnel in honor of Professor Elizabeth U. Canning at the 38th Annual Meeting of the Society for Invertebrate Pathology, August 7-11, 2005, Anchorage, Alaska. The Founders' Lecture Honoree is an individual who is considered to have made such meritorious contributions to the science of Invertebrate Pathology that he/she has significantly influenced the origin, direction, recognition and science of Invertebrate Pathology as a distinct discipline. Professor Canning was selected because of her outstanding and long lasting impact on science in diverse areas and her many contributions to Invertebrate Pathology. This tribute reviews the teaching and research career of Professor Canning and highlights her many accomplishments and awards. In addition, it is customary for the Founders' Lecturer to review his research career and contributions to the field of Invertebrate Pathology which are presented in this article.
