Technical Abstract: Glycerol and citric acid were combined with starch in a statistically designed series of reactions to produce materials with modified thermal properties. Thermal characterization of the reaction products were performed using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis. When small amounts of starch were introduced to the reaction mixture the heat capacity of the products exhibited a significant decrease with increasing reaction temperature. As larger amounts of starch were added to the reaction mixture the heat capacity of the products became dependent on both reaction time and temperature. The derivative curves obtained from thermogravimetry were statistically analyzed. The main effects of starch were on the appearance and magnitude of a decomposition peak detected near 370 deg C. Additional peaks in the derivative curves were correlated most strongly to reaction temperature or time.
