Technical Abstract: The lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) can infest long, short, and medium grain rough rice. There is little current information regarding susceptibility of these types or of individual varieties within these general classifications. A series of tests were conducted in which lesser grain borers were exposed on 8-10 varieties for each class. Progeny production was assessed for each class and correlated with physical characteristics of rice kernels. Certain varieties within each class appeared to be tolerant to the lesser grain borer in comparison with more susceptible varieties. Results show the potential of incorporating varietal tolerance as part of an overall control strategy to protect rough rice from damage caused by the lesser grain borer.
