Technical Abstract: The numbers of Aedes albopictus, Culex quinquefasciatus, and Ochlerotatus triseriatus landing on a human subject in each of eight observation periods in 24 hours were compared (on a catch-per-unit-effort basis) with collections of each species in the corresponding observation period using a CDC light trap baited with carbon dioxide. Temporal variations in the level of activity indicated by the two measurement methods were poorly related and precluded reliable estimation of landing rates based on the numbers of female mosquitoes in a trap. The use of trap data from selected observation periods improved the precision of estimates of mean landing rate in some cases and suggests that targeting the operation of CDC traps to specific times in the diel period may be possible without compromising the quality of estimates of host-vector contact.
