Technical Abstract: At least eight viruses are recorded infecting perennial ryegrass (Lolium spp.), the most widely grown cool-season grass in the world, and causing diseases in them. Understanding these viruses, especially those poorly-characterized ones, will enable their prevention and control in forage and turf industries. This chapter summarizes our knowledge of Lolium latent virus (LLV), a novel member of the family Flexiviridae, of the perennial ryegrass. The experimental host range of this virus is extended to include rice, several grasses and important experimental hosts. The serological data indicate that LLV is distinct from viruses in the genus Potexvirus, but weakly related to viruses in the genus Allexivirus. The partial nucleotide sequence (approximately 70%) of LLV confirmed its novel nature and its affinities to Potexvirus and other genera in Flexiviridae. Detection and diagnosis methods, especially the RT-PCR, will of use for regulatory agency and other scientists who are interested in rapid, sensitive and accurate detection of the virus.
