Interpretive Summary: A new high-yielding soybean variety, NC-Raleigh, has been developed cooperatively by USDA-ARS and North Carolina State University using standard and plant breeding methods. It is a determinate group VII maturity variety adapted to southern USA between 27 degrees and 37 degrees north latitude. NC-Raleigh has very good standability, equal to other soybean varieties currently in production. It is resistant to soybean mosaic virus, stem canker, frogeye leafspot, and bacterial pustule diseases. It is not resistant to nematode infection. Measured at 13% moisture, the seeds of NC-Raleigh have 35% protein and 19% oil. NC-Raleigh is not Round-up Ready and is not considered to be a GMO (genetically modified organism) soybean variety.

Technical Abstract: A soybean cultivar, NC-Raleigh was cooperatively developed and released by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service and the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service. It has excellent yield potential. It is a determinate group VII maturity soybean variety adapted to southern USA, 27° - 37° N lat. NC-Raleigh is an F5-derived selection from the cross of two USDA breeding lines N85-492/N88-480. During 1999 –2001, NC-Raleigh was evaluated in eight environments of the North Carolina State University Official Variety Trials where it yielded 202 kg ha-1 greater than the cultivar N7001 (3,135 kg ha-1) and 336 kg ha-1 greater than the cultivar 97B61 (3,001 kg ha-1). Plant height of NC-Raleigh was measured in 4 environments and was 5 cm shorter than N7001 (102 cm). During 1997 – 2000, NC-Raleigh was evaluated at 42 environments in the USDA-ARS Southern Region Uniform Tests. Seed yield of NC-Raleigh was 61 and 115 kg ha-1 greater than the cultivars Benning (2,667 kg ha-1) and Haskell (2,721 kg ha-1), respectively. The protein concentration for NC-Raleigh was 401 g kg-1and the oil concentration for NC-Raleigh was 221 g kg-1, greater than Benning (201 g kg-1) or Haskell (198 g kg-1). NC-Raleigh has white flowers, tawny pubescence, hila color varies (black and brown), and tan pod wall color. In USDA regional tests, NC-Raleigh was rated resistant to Soybean Mosaic Virus and stem canker (Diaporthe phaseolorum var. caulivora). It was rated susceptible to soybean cyst (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) and root-knot (Meloidogyne incognita and M. arenaria) nematodes. In USDA trials in NC, NC-Raleigh was rated resistant to frogeye leaf spot (Cercospora sojina K. Hara) and bacterial pustule [Xanthomonas campestris pv. Glycines].
