Citation: Chiemsombat, P., Adkins, S.T. 2006. Tospoviruses. Molecular Diagnosis of Plant Viruses. Interpretive Summary: This book chapter, in Molecular Diagnosis of Plant Viruses, overviews this group of viruses, the symptoms and economic losses they cause, their geographic distribution, phylogenetics, management, and details for their diagnosis using molecular tools. This group of viruses effects many crops worldwide and thus, this chapter brings together relevant facts for diagnosticians, extension agents, crop consultants, and university, government, regulatory and industry scientists fulfilling an important part of the ARS mission.
Technical Abstract: Tospoviruses infect important vegetable (and other) crops in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions worldwide. Accurate diagnosis of plant virus infection is the first step in disease management. Symptoms may clearly indicate a tospovirus infection but symptoms alone are insufficient to identify the tospovirus species involved. It is far more reliable to base diagnoses on serological- and nucleic acid-based methods as discussed in this chapter.
