Technical Abstract: Several outbreaks of severe acute BVD (SA BVD) in different locations were traced to a single BVDV strain. Four viruses, IAF 103 (Quebec), 1373 (Ontario), 24515 (ontario) and NY 93 (New York state), were isolated following outbreaks of SA BVD occurring between 1993 and 1995. Sequence comparison revealed that these four isolates were all derivatives of the same viral strain. The explosive spread of this viral strain suggests outbreaks of high virulence strains need to be managed differently than outbreaks of low virulence strains. Further, each laboratory isolating this strain gave it a different name. This is a problem when researchers are doing comparative studies and don’t realize that isolates with different names are actually the same strain.
