Interpretive Summary: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) - Agricultural Research Service (ARS) - National Clonal Germplasm Repository (NCGR) in Corvallis, Oregon, preserves more than 1730 types of strawberries originating from 36 countries. This study is part of an ongoing effort by the NCGR to develop molecular techniques that can be used to identify different types of strawberry. We present the sequence of 37 pairs of DNA segments that were developed and observed to identify differences in different strawberry types. These segments will be used to verify the identity of strawberry varieties in the NCGR collection and to develop characteristic fingerprints for each type.

Technical Abstract: We presented 37 microsatellite primer pairs developed from a cDNA library of Fragaria x ananassa Duch. cv. Strawberry Festival. Polymorphism was high and the number of presumptive alleles of 13 EST-SSRs in 70 strawberry cultivars ranged from 5 to 32 per primer pair, averaging 16.1. Cross-species amplification was also high and ranged from 89% in F. vesca L. to 100% in the progenitor species of octoploid strawberry, F. chiloensis (L.) Duch. and F. virginiana Duch.
