Technical Abstract: Ecological Issues in a Changing World: Status, Response and Strategy (2004), edited by Hong et al., is a compilation of papers on some of the major topics presented at the 8th International Congress of Ecology (INTECOL), held in Seoul, South Korea in 2002. As such, it spans a wide range of subject material, from carbon fluxes to allelopathy to ecological engineering. Like most conference volumes, there is something here for everyone, but landscape ecologists might be inclined to skip the majority of the articles. The four sections of the book cover a range of spatial scales, and a range of perspectives, including some, like the use of Feng Shui in urban planning, not usually seen in Western ecological literature. The main drawback of this volume is the very poor copyediting. The editors and publisher should have made a greater effort to have the individual papers checked over, because it is a shame to see language issues detracting from what could be a valuable tool in making clear the global scope and range in perspectives for the many issues and concerns facing ecologists.
