It has been reported that corn gluten meal (CGM) has preemergnce herbicide properties that may be useful in organic vegetable production. However, studies with CGM in vegetables are limited, in part due to the need for an effective method for making uniform applications. The objective of this project was to develop a mechanized CGM method. The following factors were considered: CGM formulation (powdered or granulated), rate (250, 500 and 750 g/m2), and method (banded or broadcast). Evaluations were conducted in 2004 under field conditions at Lane, Oklahoma, USA. The granulated product produced a more uniform flow than the powder and gave more consistent results. The band application was more uniform than the broadcast. These studies demonstrate the potential for mechanized application of CGM in for weed control in organic vegetable production. The development of this application technology will enable more extensive study of the use of CGM in vegetable production.
