Title: ENVIRONMENTAL AND AGRICULTURAL CONSEQUENCES AS A RESULT OF ANTIMICROBIAL USE

Technical Abstract: It is well known that use of any type of antimicrobic will result in the development of resistance. Resistance may also develop in the absence of drug use when other environmental pressures are applied; for example, during the use of disinfectants. The issue is complex and involves the entire ecosystem. The purpose of this symposium is to expand our understanding of microbiological issues in animal feeds, aquaculture, hospital settings, the environment (particularly wastewater) and animal production and assess the impact antimicrobic use has on the development of resistance, particularly in zoonotic bacteria. A description of what is known, as well as information gaps will be presented.
