Root growth of peach rootstocks with different vigor. Proceedings of the Seventh National Symposium of the Italian Society for Horticultural Science (SOI), Naples, May 4-6, 2004, p. 277. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The aim of the present study was to compare the root growth of five peach rootstocks with different vigor: 'Nemaguard', 'K119-50', 'P30-135', 'Hiawatha', and 'K146-43' (listed by decreasing vigor). Root growth was measured using sequences of digital pictures taken with a digital camera inside minirhizotrons. All rootstocks had two peaks of growth (one in spring and the second after harvest). Low root production occurred during Stage III of fruit growth when fruit is reported to have the highest sink-strength. In addition, rootstocks had different root production. These differences appeared to be in agreement with rootstock vigor (decreasing root production passing from the most to the least vigorous rootstock). 'K146-43' and 'P30-135' tended to produce more roots in shallower soil layers than vigorous rootstocks. |
