Interpretive Summary: Optimal usage of nitrogen is a serious challenge for pecan farmers. It is expensive and potentially contributes to environmental harm. Principles are outlined that enable orchard managers to better understand how nitrogen is absorbed, translocated, and cycled in trees and how its usage can approach optimization. This information helps farmers to reduce nitrogen usage as well as potentially reduce the cost of nitrogen fertilization management in pecan orchards.
