Technical Abstract: RAPD, AFLP, and ISSR markers have been used for cultivar and species identification within the genus Hydrangea. Genetic diversity estimates have also been based on DNA sequence data and genome size variation. Despite their advantages, all of these methods have limited usefulness in a large scale breeding and gene discovery program. We recently established codominant microsatellite markers for Hydrangea. Here we evaluate their utility in estimating species diversity and identifying cultivars. Included is comparative data on hybrid verification using SSR markers. Future research includes linkage mapping and gene discovery, particularly with respect to remontant flowering traits.
