Interpretive Summary: Molecular biological methods have become increasingly applicable to the diagnosis of infectious diseases and vaccine development. To become widely used the methods need to be easy, safe, sensitive, reproducible and eventually automated to facilitate the evaluation of large number of samples. The purpose of this chapter is to provide general background information for the nonspecialists about current biotechnology in the diagnosis of infectious disease and vaccine development.
