Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) infections are found worldwide, though that may soon change. Programs targeting BVD elimination began during the early 1990s in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Those countries are very close to their goal. Can BVD eradication, based on European models, work in the United States? What are the economic benefits? What impact will BVD infection of wildlife have on control measures? Clearly, there is a need for education and a nationwide discussion regarding BVD control. In light of developments in Europe, this is becoming imperative. Of that, there is no question.
