Technical Abstract: This brief introduction summarizes the contents of 11 articles appearing in the March 2005 issue of Mycological Research and places them into some degree of scientific perspective within the context of insect mycology. The author is the journal's Contributing Editor in charge of processing manuscripts dealing with fungi associated with arthropods and was invited by the Executive Editor to prepare this introduction because so many subject-related articles appearing together in any single issue allow it to be treated as a themed number of the journal. The included articles deal with many aspects of fungi associated with insects as pathogens, commensals, food for mycophagous insects, and phytopathogens vectored by insects. Also included is one article about a mycofungicide because of the commonality of problems in characterizing all fungi used as the active ingredients of biocontrol products.
