Interpretive Summary: Sugarbeet cyst nematode (SBCN) is one of the most important pests of sugarbeet worldwide. After about 90 years of research and breeding efforts worldwide and 55 years of efforts at Salinas by the USDA-ARS tests at Salinas and Brawley, CA, suggest that finally cultivars with resistance to SBCN are nearing commercial reality. In addition to the long known Beta procumbens source that has failed to breed true or comes linked to deliterious baggage, new sources of resistance have been found in the progenitor of all cultivated beets, B. vulgaris subsp. maritima. This source was found in the current breeding program at Salinas and breeding lines CN12 CN72, and C927-4 with this resistance are being released. In field tests, this non-procumbens source showed equal efficacy as the procumbens source for preventing yield loss and SBCN buildup.
