Technical Abstract: In the past year SEPRL has been involved in several projects for turkey health. First, the development of a rapid diagnostic test for avian paramyxovirus type 1 and Exotic Newcastle disease (END) virus to aid in control of the outbreak in California. This test was designed, optimized and validated and has been adopted by the APHIS as a rapid test for END virus. The second project was also outbreak related. It was determined whether the newly discovered SARS coronavirus was able to replicate and cause disease in turkeys and four other domestic poultry species. It was shown that SARS not only did not cause disease, but replicates poorly, if at all in the five avian species evaluated. Thirdly, research on turkey enteric viruses has focused on evaluating the pathogenesis turkey origin reoviruses which are genetically distinct from chicken origin reoviruses.
