Technical Abstract: Perennial cool-season grasses are an integral part of livestock agriculture in a large part of the USA. This chapter describes the biology, culture, management, use, and breeding history of seven grasses or genera: the bluegrasses, the ryegrasses, the fescues, orchardgrass, smooth bromegrass, timothy, and reed canarygrass. This is one of several chapters that describe and document the range of species and varieties of forage crops used throughout North America. References are provided for readers who are interested in additional information.
