Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A review of the 36th Great Lakes Regional Meeting (GLRM) of the American Chemical Society held in Peoria, Illinois, at the historic Père Marquette on October 17-20, 2004 is given. Because agriculture is an important Midwest industry providing food and agricultural materials worldwide, GLRM organizers wanted to attract researchers working in varied agricultural disciplines in addition to producing a strong technical program ACS members expect. To this end, a strong collaborative effort was established between GLRM, the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR, ARS, USDA), and the American Oil Chemists' Society. The meeting had over 440 papers and posters presented over three days and attracted greater than 750 participants from a ten-state region including presenters from Canada and Germany. There were 150 research posters that included 50 undergraduate research posters. The exposition featured 34 vendors and eight vendor technical workshops. The complete technical program and abstracts can be viewed at: http://membership.acs.org/g/glrm04/program.htm.
