Technical Abstract: Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat, caused mainly by Fusarium graminearum, is a destructive disease worldwide. The lack of adequate sources of FHB resistance hinders the progress of breeding for FHB resistance. Discovery of additional resistance is critical for developing stable resistance and for diversifying the resistance gene pool. The objective of this project was to evaluate FHB reaction in spring habit wheat germplasm deposited in the USDA National Small Grain Collection (USA) in an attempt to identify new sources of resistance. At the meantime, we were interested in establishing a germplasm evaluation system that would allow us to reliably identify FHB resistance under our environment. From 1998 to 2002, a total of 4500 accessions, originated primarily from China, Japan, South America and Europe, have been screened. Large variations in FHB reactions were observed. A number of accessions exhibited low FHB index (incidence*severity), reduced seed damage, low levels of deoxynivalenol (DON), resistance to point-inoculation, or combinations thereof. Accessions with moderate levels of resistance were identified in germplasm from all of the targeted regions, however, a higher frequency was found in germplasm originated from South America and Europe.
