Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In the information age, we often cannot discern the quality of the information we see. With environmental issues, emotions and political agendas cloud the issue. The objective of this popular press article is to provide readers with descriptions of the scientific method and the results thus obtained, and also a series of questions readers can consider when trying to evaluate whether something is opinion, assertion, or documented observations. Issues discussed include cognitive dissonance, partial truths, faulty experimental tests that can find only the expected answer, and peer review as a safeguard for the process. The target audience is the general public.
