Technical Abstract: The pathogenesis of a novel genetic group of reoviruses collected from commercial turkeys (TRV's) with enteritis has been evaluated in specific pathogen free poults. Four TRV isolates were inoculated into separate groups of poults at three days post-hatch. Poults were observed for clinical disease, gross and microscopic lesions for two weeks post inoculation. Body weights were compared to sham inoculated hatch-mates at 0, 2, 5, 7 and 9 days post inoculation. Among the five isolates tested, clinical disease was generally mild, however, significant decreases in poult body weights was observed in all treatment groups on at least one time point post inoculation. Microscopic evaluation also revealed moderate to severe atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius in poults inoculated with each of the TRV isolates. The antigenic relatedness of the TRV isolates to chicken origin reoviruses was also determined.
