Title: Microbial Community Structure and Enzyme Activities in a Sandy Loam Soil Fumigated with Methyl Bromide and Alternative Biocides

Technical Abstract: Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiles and various enzymatic activities were studied in soil at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 90 d after fumigation with methyl bromide (MeBr) and chloropicrin (CP), propargyl bromide (PrBr), InLine, iodomethane (Midas), CP and methyl isothiocyanate (MITC). The activities of arylsulfatase and dehydrogenase were decreased up to 28 d of incubation after soil fumigation. Differences in the biocidal action of the various fumigants were low. However, both enzyme activities recovered earlier (at 21 d incubation) in soils fumigated with MeBr + CP compared to the other fumigants. After an initial decrease, the activity of beta-glucosidase was increased by 58% at 14 d past fumigation. The total amount of FAMEs was unaffected by soil fumigation during the 90 d incubation period. However, selective soil fungal (18:2'6c, 18:3'6c, 18:1''c) and bacterial (i15:0, a 15:0, i17:0, a17:0) FAMEs were decreased within 1 to 3 d incubation after fumigation with InLine, CP and MITC, suggesting differences in the sensitivity within the microbial community towards these biocides.
