Technical Abstract: A set of Ukrainian melon heirlooms that are of primary breeding importance namely Lipneva, Samarskaia, Titovka, Titovka, Zlata, G-14 Dneprynka 163, Bereginia, Ineia, Musa, Titovka origen seed, Titovka1r DSAU, Promitei, ZhZL, KZhT, KRL, Diana, L/20/1-2, L/22/1-25, Krinichanka, Titovka, Ingulka, Selena, Lada, Tavrichanka, Dachnitsa were tested along other 15 genotypes from different parts of world. All these cultivars are thoroughly characterized for their yield differences, sex expression, fruit characters and disease resistance. Molecular diversity is being estimated using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs) developed from 20 MseI-EcoRI primer combinations. These primers produced a total number of 3350 AFLP markers. Further, a microsatellite enriched library has been developed for capturing simple repeat DNA sequences. Genomic fragments and 96 randomly selected clones were sequenced. Twenty-eight sequences contained long repeat motifs of GA, CA and CAA with sufficient flanking sequence for primer design. The polymorphic markers in this study can be useful in assessing genetic diversity and in marker assisted breeding programs of melon. This research is sponsored by NATO Science Program.
