Technical Abstract: There is a great deal of variability in the chemical properties of biobased ingredients used in the development of metalworking and other lubricant formulations. These variations include molecular weight, type and number of functional groups, degree of unsaturation, branching, etc. Unfortunately, the effect of these chemical variabilities on the tribological properties of biobased lubricants is not well understood. In this work, the elastohydrodynamic property of biobased ingredients with varying chemical structures is investigated. The result is discussed in terms of structure-property relationships linking chemical variability and processing conditions with tribological performance. Such analysis is essential for the eventual goal of developing qualitative and quantitative models for predicting the tribological performance of biobased materials.
