Technical Abstract: This presentation will synthesize current information on soil organic matter fractionation presented during the S3-sponsored symposium entitled "Meaningful Pools in Determining Soil C and N Dynamics". The intention is to relate soil ecosystem function, such as carbon (C) storage potential or nutrient cycling efficiency, to the various soil organic matter fractions discussed during the symposium. These relationships will be established through integration of the structural and functional aspects of soil organic matter with soil biological processes.
