Interpretive Summary: Many species of lonchaeid flies are important to agriculture as primary or secondary pests of fruit and vegetables. Commodities attacked in tropical America include passion fruit, edible fruits of various cacti, and cassava. This chapter provides an identification tool (key to genera) for this family from Central and South America. It is part of a manual on the flies of Central America, which will provide keys to all of the families and genera of flies of this region. No books of such scope have been published for this region since 1900. This book will be an important reference for regulatory agencies, scientists, and anyone else needing to identify flies from Central America.
Technical Abstract:
A diagnosis, key to genera, review of biology and classification, and summary of the Mesoamerican fauna of the family Lonchaeidae are provided. Four genera and 93 species have been recorded from the Neotropical Region, of which three genera and 29 species are known from Mexico and Central America.
