Crop Science. 45:1166-1167 Interpretive Summary: Interpretive Summary: 'Burton' is a new barley cultivar that is resistant to feeding damage caused by the Russian wheat aphid. The resistance was derived by identifying a resistant "wild" barley accession held in the USDA-ARS National Small Grains Collection, and crossing this source of resistance with agronomically superior breeding lines. This is the first RWA-resistant barley cultivar to be released, and it combines good resistance with goo agronomic performance. Burton will enhance producer profitability and environmental health by enabling insecticide-free barley production in areas where RWA infestations are severe.
Technical Abstract: Technical Abstract: 'Burton' is a Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia)-resistant two-rowed spring feed barley developed cooperatively and released in 2004 by the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Idaho, Colorado, Nebraska, and New Mexico Agricultural Experiment Stations. Burton is best adapted to environments with moderate to high yield potential. Burton has the pedigree 'Baronesse'/3/'Crystal'/2/'Klages'*3/STARS 9301B. Baronesse is a two-rowed feed barley developed in Germany and marketed in the United States by Peterson Seed and Western Plant Breeders. Crystal and Klages are both two-rowed malting barleys developed by the Agricultural Research Service. The source of RWA resistance in Burton is the germplasm line STARS-9301B. STARS-9301B was developed from PI 366450, a 6-rowed landrace collected in Afghanistan and held in the National Small Grains Collection at Aberdeen, Idaho, USA.
