Technical Abstract: Many species of entomopathogenic fungi have been released for insect control. Most inundative and inoculative releases have included one of only a few species of Beauveria, Metarhizium and Paecilomyces. We will address: 1) ecological versus physiological host range, 2) other nontarget effects, 3) potential replacement of, or recombination with, naturally occurring fungal strains, 4) nontarget effects over time including dissemination and persistence, 5) impact of inundative versus inoculative releases, 6) comparisons among releases in different crops, and 7) comparisons among studies in different climates or different parts of the world. We aim to find common themes among past and current projects. We wish to stimulate workshop discussion of the status of knowledge of nontarget impacts of these fungi that can elucidate the lessons learned and our future needs. In particular, we hope to contribute ideas pertinent to registration of fungi for use in insect pest management.
