Title: Calcium Intakes in Overweight Young Adults: the Bogalusa Heart Study

Interpretive Summary: AN INTERPRETIVE SUMMARY IS NOT REQUIRED

Technical Abstract: The youth/adolescent food frequency questionnaire was administered to 1307 young adults ages 20-38 years (73% Euro American (EA) and 27% African American (AA); 39% male and 61 % female). Overweight was calculated as body mass index (BMI) >= 25, waist circumference (WC) > 102 cm in men and > 88 cm in women, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) > 0.90 in men and > 0.80 in women. Fifty-seven percent of young adults were overweight by BMI, 29% overweight by WC, and 31 % overweight by WHR. Mean calcium intake per 1000 kilocalorie was 364 mg for males and 358 mg for females; 370 mg for EA and 334 mg for AA (p <.0001); 365 mg for overweight by BMI and 356 mg for not overweight by BMI; 361 mg for overweight by WC and 356 mg for not overweight by WC; and 352 mg for overweight by WHR and 363 mg for not overweight by WHR. Using univariate ANOVA, adjusting for gender, ethnicity, and age, there were no significant differences in calcium intakes between young adults overweight and not overweight using BMI (R2 = .020, F = .707, p = .401), WC (R2 = .020, F = .009, p = .923), or WHR (R2 = .021, F = 1.965, p = .161). Using logistic regression, adjusting for age, gender, and ethnicity, calcium intakes were not associated with overweight status in young adults using BMI (B = .000, p = .462), WC (B = .000, p = .998), or WHR (B = -.001, p = .206). Calcium intakes were not associated with being overweight among young adults; which differs from findings of other studies.
