Technical Abstract: As a part of the Soil Moisture Experiments in the summer of 2002 (SMEX02), soil moisture and satellite radar data were collected in and around the Walnut Creek watershed (Iowa, USA). A primary purpose of this experiment was to obtain a consistent soil moisture dataset that would contribute to our understanding of soil moisture remote sensing through arable crops. In this paper, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data of the European Radar Satellite 2 (ERS-2) was used to investigate the C-band backscatter sensitivity to soil moisture measured from corn and soybean covered fields.
