Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Optimal nitrogen management is critical for production of high yields of high quality potatoes. In this report, two years results of field experiments using Ranger Russet and Umatilla Russet cultivars with various rates of pre-plant nitrogen, as well as rates and frequencies of in-season nitrogen applications are discussed. Pre-plant nitrogen application rates in the range of 50 to 150 lbs/acre had minimal effects on the total tuber yield as well as yields of different size grade tubers. The total nitrogen for the entire growing period across the different pre-plant nitrogen rates was 300 lbs/acre. Increasing the total nitrogen from 300 to 400 lbs/acre failed to show beneficial effects of increased total yield or yields of premium grade tubers. Likewise, tuber yields and quality were not affected by in-season nitrogen application frequencies in the range of 2 to 10.
