Technical Abstract: Germplasm collections are a valuable source of diverse genetic stock and information. To make the Citrullus lanatus germplasm collection more valuable, expanded germplasm characterization is desired. Two potential descriptors are described and tested in this report, lycopene content and total carotenoid content of watermelon fruit. Benefits and limitations of this method are discussed. Listing lycopene content and total carotenoid content as descriptors for GRIN will provide valuable information for watermelon breeders.
