Title: ITEMS FROM NORTH DAKOTA: THE USDA-ARS CEREAL CROPS RESEARCH UNIT.

Technical Abstract: Progress in wheat and durum genetics and pathology research conducted at the USDA-ARS Cereal Crops Research Unit is reported. A summary of the various projects reported on is as follows: 1) The major domestication and free-threshing gene Q in wheat has been isolated by positional cloning 2) Toward the cloning of the Tsn1 gene, a BAC contig has been established and chromosome walking initiated 3) Novel genes and QTLs for resistance to tan spot and Stagonospora nodorum have been mapped and characterized 4) More than 100 CIMMYT-produced synthetic wheats have been evaluated for reaction to tan spot and Stagonospora nodorum 5) Novel glutenins and gliadins have been identified from wild emmer wheat and their chromosomal locations determined 6) A 1AS-1DL chromosome translocation line in durum carrying Glu-1D has been characterized 7) A novel high-throughput marker technology (TRAP) has been used to characterized durum-T. dicoccoides disomic substitution lines and used for chromosome mapping in a population of recombinant inbred lines 8) New genetic stocks and germplasm available for distribution are reported.
