Citation: Phytopathology 94:S69 Technical Abstract: Phakopsora pachyrhizi is the causal agent of soybean rust, a devastating foliar disease that occurs in most soybean growing regions throughout the world, except for Europe and North America. In order to understand the early events in the infection process, an initial study was conducted to characterize and identify proteins in P. pachyrhizi urediniospores. Trypsin digested two-dimensional gel electrophoresis spots were peptide finger-printed and sequenced using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization with automated tandem time of flight fragmentation of selected ions (MALDI-TOF/TOF). Proteins identified by database searches from putative peptide sequences within a 95% confidence interval (CI) were evaluated and placed into functional categories, including transcription regulation, cell division and protein signaling.
