Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: We evaluated the effectiveness of Streptococcus iniae vaccines prepared from formalin-killed cells and concentrated extracellular products (greater than 2 kDa) of a single isolate of S. iniae (ARS-60) Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus for prevention of streptococcal disease. Tilapia were vaccinated by IP injection of the vaccine or tryptic soy broth (control) and challenged by IP injection with 1 H 108 colony-forming units of S. iniae 21-30 days post immunization. Tilapia had a relative percent survival (RPS) of greater than 80%. Significantly increased antibody titers were obtained by immunization using an anti-streptococcal ELISA. Passive transfer of anti-streptoccal antibody provided protection against S. iniae infection. The research demonstrated that an efficacious S. iniae vaccine that may be administered by IP injection, was safe and dependent on antibody-mediated immunity against S. iniae. The vaccine is an effective health management tool in reducing economic losses in tilapia production caused S. iniae infection.
