Technical Abstract: The Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station announce the release of soybean [Glycine max.(L.) Merr.] germplasm line D99-2018 for breeding and experimental purposes. D99-2018 has the gene Rps 6 for resistance to Phytophthora sojae added to the cultivar Bedford, and is provided as parental material for soybean breeders interested in combining high yield with multiple pest resistance. D99-2018 was developed by backcrossing. It was selected in the fifth generation from the cross Bedford (7) x Altona. The original donor of Rps6 was the Maturity Group 00 cultivar Altona released by the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada in 1966. Rps6 provides resistance to races 1-4, 10, 12, 14-16, 18-21, and 25 of the first 27 identified races of P. sojae. D99-2018 is similar to Bedford for all observable traits and has the same level of resistance to the soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines), races 3 and 14 as Bedford. D99-2018 was in replicated yield tests on clay soil at Stoneville, MS for three years. Seed yield for Bedford and D99-2018 were 1263.4 kg/ha and 1733.8 kg/ha, respectively in 2000; 1001.3 and 2089.9 kg/ha respectively, in 2001; and 3265.9 and 3769.9 kg/ha, respectively, in 2002. Seed yield differences were significant at the 5% level in 2000 and at the 1% level in 2001 and 2002. A seed sample of 100 seeds (more if seed supplies permit) will be available for research purposes from the Crop Genetics and Production Research Unit, P.O. Box 345, Stoneville, MS 38776. Genetic material of this release will also be deposited in the National Plant Germplasm System where it will be available for research purposes, including development and commercialization of new varieties/cultivars. Recipients of seed are requested to make appropriate recognition if this germplasm is used in the development of new germplasm or cultivars.
