Technical Abstract: Since the successful commercial production of penicillin in the 1940s, microbial fermentation has been widely adopted as one of the methods of choice for the industrial scale production of small-molecule pharmaceuticals. Early efforts to improve or alter the performance characteristics of these biopharmaceuticals involved in vitro chemical derivatization and/or total synthesis. With the advent of biotechnology, the genetic modification of pharmaceutical-producing organisms has gained ground in replacing the in vitro approaches for improving the cost and performance of biopharmaceuticals. The fermentative production of large-molecule biopharmaceuticals (i.e., bioactive proteins) has also become possible. Furthermore, the advances in biopharmaceuticals technology have served as an invaluable knowledge base and platform for the budding biocommodity industry in which industrial chemicals are produced in bulk quantities from renewable biobased feedstocks. This presentation will survey the advances in the use of genetically modified microorganisms for the biosynthesis of novel antibiotic derivatives, improving the production yields of biopharmaceuticals, and the production of bulk industrial chemicals from agriculturally renewable resources.
