Interpretive Summary: Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) agronomic performance may see dramatic improvement if genetically distinct parents are used in a cross. As a first step in assessing this, DNA marker technology was used to classify 80 male and 26 female hop accessions into distinct genetic groups. Two major groups were identified that represented European and European x wild American hybrids, and these were subdivided into 13 smaller subgroups. These results will guide hop breeders in designing crosses between genetically distinct parents to study hybrid performance.

Technical Abstract: The use of genetically diverse hop (Humulus lupulus L.) parents to capture heterosis for important agronomic traits has received little attention by hop breeders. In this study, Townsend and Henning classified 80 male and 26 female hop accessions into diversity groups via AFLP analysis. Two major groups representing European and European x wild American hybrids were detected, and these were subdivided into 13 smaller groups. Results from this research provide hop breeders with a starting point for designing potential heterotic crosses.
