Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Neotyphodium fungal endophytes form associations with many wild and cultivated C3 grasses. The fungus produces alkaloids, which may provide resistance to insects. Some of these alkaloids are toxic to livestock. An estimate of the frequency of fungal endophyte in seed lots is, therefore, desirable. A PCR assay specific for Neotyphodium endophyte in tall fescue was compared to PDA culture of the endophyte from plant tissue. There was 100% agreement of PCR assays with PDA culture results from stem tissue samples. Additionally, results from PCR assay of seed lots using single seeds and PDA culture of fungal endophyte from germinated plants were statistically identical.
