Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Cotton Structure and Quality Research Unit will focus on two major projects. Fiber quality will be addressed in a large effort that uses a standard protocol in our pilot-scale spinning and weaving mill to test the importance of new measurements such as maturity, fineness, short (or broken) fiber and nep counts in the production of quality yarns and fabrics. Support of breeders for quality measurements is being supported, both at the pilot scale and field testing levels. Structural studies target the interaction of water with the fiber and its substructure to learn how water improves the properties of cotton. The roles of the individual members of the unit will be summarized.
