Technical Abstract: NMR spectroscopy is used to study the conformational changes of the collagen and glycosaminoglycan molecules in bovine articular cartilage. Molecular conformation will change with the charge on each molecule. The charge on each molecule varies spatially throughout the cartilage. For a given point in space, the charge on each molecule can be screened by placing the cartilage in an increasingly ionic environment. The conformational changes are noted through changes in the chemical shifts in the NMR spectrum as a function of salt concentration.
